What are some of the best ways to preserve the memories you make while studying abroad? Let us explore some creative and practical methods together.
Capture the Moment
Take pictures and document your journey! It doesn’t matter whether it’s with your smartphone or a professional camera.
You could also consider buying an instant camera. Vintage-style photos look great compiled into a scrapbook filled with stickers, maps, recipes, and other keepsakes from your adventures.
A tip: Don’t hesitate to ask your new acquaintances if they would like to take group pictures, especially if they are also international students. They are likely eager to document their study abroad journey as well, and they will surely happily join. Remember to share the pictures if you are the one taking the group pictures!
Consider also creating an Instagram account specifically for your study abroad experiences. It’s a great way to share moments with your close friends and family.
Keep a Diary
This sounds like a lot of effort, but it doesn’t have to be! Even if it’s just a couple of lines, it is absolutely worth it. Take the time to scribble down your thoughts, feelings, and encounters with new friends.
Pay special attention to the people you meet – you never know whether the random person sitting down next to you on the bus will become your lifelong best friend. Believe me, it is absolutely worth it!
If you are not the paper-pen type, send text messages to your own number on WhatsApp every day. If you do not like writing, use voice memos or video diaries as an alternative!
Collect
Chances are high that you will be traveling a lot to nearby cities or countries during your study abroad trip. Think of something that you can collect from the places you visit. Here are some suggestions:
- Stickers: These are especially easy to get if you are studying abroad in the US. Stick them on your laptop, your water bottle, or your suitcase.
- Postcards: Send postcards back to your home country’s address. You will have a bunch of postcards waiting for you once you get home, and your family will also be happy to receive them.
- Magnets or shot glasses: are easy to display back at home.
- Recipes: Collect local recipes as well as recipes from the people you meet.
- Fabric: Collect fabric at each destination and craft a quilt.
Signature Souvenirs
My personal all-time favorite. Try collecting signatures from the people you meet abroad. Some suggestions:
- T-shirt: Have the people you meet sign a t-shirt. Any t-shirt works – you can also check whether your host university sells t-shirts.
- Picture frames: Frame your favorite group picture and have your friends sign the picture frame.
- Book filling: Encourage friends to write down messages for you in a book. If you want a fun twist, you can purchase a children’s friendship booklet and invite your friends to fill it out.
Those are just a few tips to get started! So go ahead and make memories that will last a lifetime!
